Applicant Guide - Tips for when applying for new roles

Nanny Registration with NannyNest

I meet all my candidates either face to face or via video call. Here are some key tips to make a positive impact with me and my clients

  • Video registration interviews typically take around 30 minutes.
  • Your registration will only be complete once all necessary documentation has been received. If you reapply for a role, an additional video call may be required.
  • Please apply for roles via email or online rather than text or WhatsApp. I will always call you to discuss roles before submitting your application.
  • Ensure  you have not already applied for the same role through another agency.
  • Read the job description thoroughly before applying to ensure you meet the criteria. I include as much detail as possible, but some personal      information will be discussed during the application process.

Your CV

Your CV is the first impression agencies and families will have of you. It needs to be professional, clear, and well-presented. Here are some guidelines to make your CV stand out:

  • Ensure your CV is up-to-date with your most recent position listed at the top.
  • Check for spelling errors and ensure the font is consistent (headings can      be different).
  • Use a clear and attractive layout. Creative designs are welcome, but keep the  content simple and easy to read.
  • Structure your CV with current employment at the top and older positions      at the bottom. Include dates for each role.
  • Limit your CV to two pages. For similar roles, summarise duties in one paragraph.
  • For non-childcare roles, include a brief note: "Non-childcare roles from 2006-2015 available upon request."
  • Do not  include personal data such as photos, DOB, NI numbers, or referee contact details. This can lead to discrimination or fraud.

References

Providing references is a legal requirement. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Agencies require at least two checkable references. NannyNest requests      two written and one verbal to ensure thorough checks.
  • I will contact your referees where possible and may ask for a verbal reference.
  • Some families require references for the past 10 years. If so, I will inform you during the process.
  • Always ask previous employers to provide a written reference with their      contact details included. Word or PDF format is preferred.
  • Nurseries often provide basic references, so you may need to provide a character reference alongside these.

Enhanced DBS

It is a legal requirement for anyone working in childcare to have an Enhanced DBS check. Here’s what you need to know:

  • An Enhanced DBS includes a check against the children’s barred list.
  • NannyNest will only accept DBS certificates if they are registered on the DBS Update Service and you have the original  certificate.
  • If you change your name (e.g., through marriage), you will need to apply for a new  DBS. The update service only applies to the name on the original certificate.
  • You can apply for your own Enhanced DBS via Ofsted. This is the most      cost-effective option, typically costing around £49.
  • NannyNest can apply for your DBS for you but there will be an admin Fee of £30.

Family Interviews

Interviews with families are a crucial part of the process. Here’s how to prepare:

  • I will send you a confirmation email with interview details, questions to help      you prepare, and my safeguarding policy.
  • If you feel uneasy attending a home interview, especially in the evening or      winter months, take someone with you who can wait in the car. This is perfectly acceptable.
  • If you struggle to find the family’s home, please contact them directly.      You will be provided with their contact number.
  • I recommend taking any professional certificates regarding courses attended to showcase to your prospective employer.
  • After the interview, I will provide feedback from the family.

By following these guidelines, you’ll present yourself as a professional and well-prepared applicant
